Success Story

Jeremy

Achieve Participant

Aged 25, Jeremy was struggling to find new employment after losing his carpentry job. He turned to drug use and then selling drugs, ultimately spending time in a correctional centre in Melbourne. After struggling with the separation from his long- term partner, Jeremy was motivated to change his circumstances and began working with The Y Rebuild team to gain employment.

As part of this programme, he completed the Enterprise Skills Quiz and has started working through eight activities from The King’s Trust Australia’s Achieve Framework – with the goal of building the skills to secure full-time work.

One of his goals was to improve his leadership skills, and as part of Achieve’s ‘Speak with Confidence’ Twenties, Jeremy was tasked with onboarding two new team members to the maintenance crew. His crew leader Allan noted, “I was impressed with the way Jeremy was trying. I didn’t want him to be nervous and wanted him to do his thing. He has the making of it.”

Jeremy continues to receive great feedback from Allan. “Jeremy is a fast learner who demonstrates initiative and gets on with what he is asked or needs to do.”

“He is switched on and has good knowledge and is mechanically minded which has been helpful.”

The skills Jeremy has built will help him secure employment. Jeremy reports that he “enjoys this work as it helps me to improve my brain power. I have to stop and think about what do I need to do to make this work, and what tools? What can I use to do this.”
