Jay has always been passionate about working in the maritime industry, and his dream is one step closer after completing the Get Into Maritime programme.
“Get Into Maritime encouraged me to build a network of people who can support me in my career goals,” said Jay. “I feel more confident about making career decisions.”
Throughout the programme, apart from maritime skills, Jay developed a wide range of valuable skills, including emotional judgement, communication, self-management, critical thinking, digital literacy, and problem solving.
“I can apply the skills I’ve learnt not only to my future career but also toother areas of my life,” he added.
At the recent end-of-programme celebration, Jay spoke on behalf of his peers, capturing what Get Into Maritme means to him as a First Nations man.
“Today, we celebrate our significant milestone. A journey that began with dreams, fueled by passion and guided by the wisdom of our ancestors. A journey that has led us to this moment, standing on the brink of a new chapter. Our journey is not just about becoming deck hands, it’s about reclaiming our heritage, challenging stereotypes and provingthat our people are capable of achieving great things.
“We are role models, inspiring the next course participants to dream big and to strive for excellence. As we step onto the deck, remember that we carry the hopes and dreams of our community. We are not just individuals, we are part of something much larger. So let us celebrate our achievements, honor our heritage and embrace the future with open hearts and minds. I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to The King’s Trust for their unwavering support and commitment. It has made all the difference.”
