Creating Better Places to Live
Through education and sustainable building projects, the Trust created better places to live.
When His Majesty King Charles III visited Australia in October 2024, he launched The King’s Foundation Australia. This new charity builds on the legacy of sustainable community development projects previously led by The King’s Trust Australia. Its first major project is the restoration and regeneration of the historic Hillview Estate in New South Wales.
Recovery from black summer fires
Nearly half of Kangaroo Island was devastated during the 2019–20 bushfires. Among the losses was Stokes Bay Community Hall—a cornerstone of local life. In collaboration with the community, we helped to rebuild the hall. The rebuilt new hall was opened in November 2023: a space for gathering today and for generations to come.
Cowper Street Development
The Cowper Street Development in Glebe, Sydney, is a partnership with the New South Wales Government to deliver 75 new social dwellings. It features two ‘woolstore’ apartment buildings and a terrace designed in harmony with local heritage. A six-star sustainable build, it sets a new benchmark for social housing.
Traditional building skills
An Australian first, the Enduring Design Masterclass was run in partnership with the University of Queensland to teach traditional design and building techniques from First Nations perspectives through to traditional architecture such as timber-framing and stone masonry.
Prince’s Terrace in Bowden, Adelaide
Prince’s Terrace in Bowden, Adelaide is a standout example of sustainable suburban living. This pioneering development offers high-quality, low-impact housing for Australian Defence Force families. It is Australia’s first residential project to achieve a 6 Star Green Star ‘As Built’ rating from the Green Building Council of Australia. The project is a collaboration between Defence Housing Australia, the Trust and the South Australian Government.
