Success Story

Hamish

Young Entrepreneurs Programme

Hamish is the founder of Ish Stitches, a crochet business that combines handmade products, creative workshops and community connection. What began as a personal hobby has grown into a business with a much broader purpose.

Crocheting first entered Hamish’s life during a difficult period and became an important source of creativity, mindfulness and connection. When he joined The King’s Trust Australia’s Young Entrepreneurs Programme, he was exploring how to turn that passion into a successful business. Along the way, however, his perspective evolved.

The programme encouraged him to think beyond products and sales and instead focus on the impact his business could have on people’s lives.

“The programme helped me reframe things,” he explained. “It’s not just about the product anymore. It’s about creating a space that supports people.”

Through workshops, mentoring and conversations with fellow participants, Hamish began refining a vision that places community wellbeing at its centre. He sees creative activities as a powerful tool for reducing isolation, encouraging a sense of community, and creating opportunities for conversations around mental health.

His ambition now extends beyond markets and classes. He hopes to bring creative workshops into hospitals, aged care facilities, community organisations and other outreach settings where people may benefit from the therapeutic nature of creative expression.

Compassion and care shines through Hamish’s entrepreneurship. In selling his products and teaching his skills, he’s intentionally creating spaces where people feel supported and connected.

“Crocheting found me at a really troubling point in my life. I want to create a space where other people can experience that same sense of support and community.”
