“I believe I can help the reef, and learn so much more.”

At just 16, Grace is excited about her future, and how she can work on the Great Barrier Reef.

Originally from Far North Queensland, Grace was facing barriers to finding work, as employment opportunities where she lives are limited. Keen to build skills for the future and to learn more about her culture and connection to the sea, she jumped at the chance to join The King’s Trust Australia’s Get Into Reef Conservation programme.

“It was amazing. I enjoyed all parts of it,” Grace said. “What got me through any tough days was thinking about everything I can do and achieve after the programme. I was really proud of getting my assessments done.” 

Through Get Into Reef Conservation, Grace developed a deeper understanding of the impact individuals can have on the environment. “I learned that everything we do for our ocean has a positive impact on so many parts of the Great Barrier Reef,” she said. And already, she’s sharing her knowledge.  “I talk about what I have learned to people who are proud of me for doing this and educating them.” 

The experience has also had a strong personal impact. “My family is proud and believes I will be able to do great things for myself.” 

Looking ahead, she feels more hopeful and motivated about the future. “Being part of this program showed me that there are real ways to care for Sea Country and build a future at the same time,” said Grace. “Learning on the reef, from scientists and cultural mentors, has helped me see what’s possible.”

Grace is currently employed full-time as a Coral BioBank Aquarist.
