Helping young people into the construction industry
For the second time this year we’re excited to launch Get Into Construction, a four-week programme that helps young people to gain a foothold in the construction industry.
Introduced in early 2024 to address the growing demand for skilled labour in the construction sector while offering a pathway for young people to kickstart their careers, Get Into Construction is run in collaboration with First Choice Apprentices and Kane Constructions.
With construction projected to be one of the fastest-growing sectors, this initiative is helping to pave the way for a new generation of construction professionals. Short of signing up for an apprenticeship, there are few opportunities to gain hands-on experience on a construction site. This makes our Get Into Construction programme one of a kind. At The King’s Trust Australia, we believe investing in young people is not only an investment in their personal growth, but an investment in our future communities.
The programme focuses on hands-on training and practical experience. Over three weeks, participants work on a real construction under the guidance of experienced professionals. This helps them gain the technical skills required for the job and fosters valuable relationships with mentors who can support their growth in the industry.
"As the demand for new development continues to rise, the construction industry is facing a skills gap that only the next generation can fill. Their energy, fresh ideas and adaptability are essential for driving innovation in construction techniques, sustainability practices, and new technologies,” said Alexander Dowthwaite, Project Lead of Sustainable Communities at The King's Trust Australia.
Beyond technical skills, the program also provides soft-skills training, such as teamwork, communication, and leadership development. This approach is designed to equip participants not just for entry-level jobs but for long-term careers.
"Programmes like this are essential because they give young people the tools and confidence to step into an industry that's full of opportunity. We're not just teaching them construction; we're helping them build a future for themselves. This is about opening doors and showing them that they can thrive in construction with the right support and skills,” said Dean Delia, Director for Young People, The King's Trust Australia.
