Why We Exist

Our Royal Founder

It all began in 2012, when His Majesty King Charles III, then His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales, visited Australia for the 15th time with a bold idea.

“I learnt an enormous amount in Australia and discovered just how direct and friendly and straightforward and so often blunt Australians are…but with such an incredibly good sense of humour.”

From 1966 to the present-day, His Majesty King Charles III has officially visited Australia 17 times, most recently in October 2024.

In 2020, His Majesty, then The Prince of Wales, recorded a message for The Trust:

I particularly wanted my Trust to operate here because Australia has always held a very special place in my heart ever since I spent time as a teenager at Geelong Grammar School in 1966.

The History behind The King's Trust Australia

Prince’s Charities Australia was founded in 2013 after His Majesty’s 2012 Royal Tour of Australia as His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales.

His Majesty’s new charity championed sustainable urban development, Indigenous cultural heritage, health and wellbeing, rural and regional resilience, military entrepreneurship, and youth unemployment.

The former Prince of Wales said at the anniversary of the inauguration of his charity, “It is no exaggeration to say that Australia and Australians have held a very special place in my heart ever since I came to this country. It is for this reason that I am so proud of the progress that the Prince’s Charities Australia has managed to make in such a remarkably short space of time.”

In 2017, the charity was renamed Prince’s Trust Australia and in 2018 became a part of The Prince’s Trust Group. It was renamed The King’s Trust Australia and The King’s Trust Group in April 2024, following the coronation of His Majesty King Charles III. The King’s Trust Group represents His Majesty’s work in the UK and across the Commonwealth.
