Scotland: The King's Foundation Summer School


The King's Trust Australia awards scholarships each year to Australian students to attend The King’s Foundation Summer School in the United Kingdom. Students learn about the sustainable practice of traditional architecture, building and heritage trades and how these can be applied in the built environment today.

What you will learn: Various traditional building skills and crafts like drawing, timber framing, stonemasonry, leaded glasswork, earth building and blacksmithing. The course will consist of lectures, site visits and practical workshops culminating in an intensive design and build exercise.

Location: The King’s Foundation Headquarters, Dumfries House, Cumnock, Scotland, KA19 2NJ.

Portugal: Arcos de Valdevez Traditional Architecture Summer School

Portugal: Premio Rafael Manzano Summer School

The King's Trust Australia awarded one scholarship for an Australian student to attend the Arcos de Valdevez Traditional Architecture Summer School 2024 in Portugal. The fantastic programme took place in the north of Portugal, where students studied local traditional urbanism, architecture and building details to preserve and create new traditional buildings for the area.

What they learnt: Local traditional urbanism, architecture and building details studied in order to preserve and create new traditional building patterns as a catalogue for the area.

Location: Arcos de Valdevez, Portugal.

Pakistan: 2023 Natural Building Workshop

Morocco: Terrachidia Earth Building Workshops

The workshop has been postponed to a date to be advised later this year.

The King's Trust Australia and INTBAU Australia are seeking participants to take part in a volunteer natural building programme in Pono Eco village, Sindh, south east Pakistan. Two groups of volunteers will be hosted in Pono village later this year. The programme offers international participants a chance to learn about traditional and natural construction techniques with the support and guidance of humanitarian architect, Yasmeen Lari. Participants will be offered a choice of practical workshops, along with additional opportunities to experiment, design and build with these materials.

What you will learn: Traditional and natural construction techniques with the support and guidance of humanitarian architect, Yasmeen Lari.

Location: Pono Eco village, Sindh, south east Pakistan.

Requirements: There are no entry requirements for this course and anyone is welcome to apply. The course will particularly benefit architecture and built environment students with an interest in traditional architecture and heritage building. The scholarship covers all tuition and accommodation fees.

Netherlands: 'Let's Build a Beautiful City' Traditional Architecture Summer School, Utrecht


This year, The King's Trust Australia provided scholarships for Australian students to take part in the 2024 Utrecht 'Let's Build a Beautiful City' Summer School over three weeks in July and August.

Leading architects, academics, and urbanists deliver lectures on urbanism and urban design, sustainability, classical and traditional architecture, and building methods. Studio exercises offer participants the opportunity to develop, or further enhance, their sketching, drawing and watercolour skills. The lectures, studio exercises and excursions will be put to practical use in a number of design projects ranging from individual buildings to larger urban spaces. The course culminates with a final design project where participants work together to design and exhibit a masterplan for a potential future community.

Location: Utrecht, the Netherlands.

Belgium: The Bruges Summer School of Architecture & Crafts


Scholarship positions are available for Australian students to attend the Bruges Summer School of Architecture & Crafts, run byLa Table Ronde de l'Architecture and INTBAU Belgium. ​The school is a "unique place of transmission and learning. It is a haven for the preservation of knowledge and a centre of excellence in architecture, nourished by the crafts and knowledge of history."

Participants will discover the rigour of drawing by hand using the rules of composition. They will exercise their eyes and their judgement on ancient architectural forms and discover their constructive qualities. Using the city of Bruges as a resource, they will get to observe, measure and draw its streets, buildings and constructional elements which over the centuries have made it an inspiring example of a beautiful, humane and durable place to live.
